A nurse, midwife, and researcher working where care meets evidence
Professor Parveen Ali is Professor of Nursing and Gender-Based Violence at the University of Sheffield, a post she has held since 2021, alongside a joint clinical-academic appointment with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH). A Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife and Registered Nurse Teacher by background, her work sits at the meeting point of clinical practice, research, and education, with a consistent focus on gender-based violence and on health inequalities affecting women and minority ethnic communities.
She is Editor-in-Chief of International Nursing Review, the official journal of the International Council of Nurses, and President of the British Pakistani Nurses and Midwifery Association. Her clinical academic role at DBTH is dedicated to building research capacity among nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals, and she provides senior research leadership across national and international bodies including NIHR, NICE, NHS England, and the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre.
Research interests
Professor Ali is a mixed-methods researcher whose work centres on gender-based violence, particularly intimate partner violence understood from the perspectives of both victims and perpetrators. Her wider programme spans technology-facilitated abuse, health inequalities related to gender and ethnicity, inclusive models of care, and the ways that better preparation and training of health professionals can help tackle those inequalities. She convenes the Sheffield Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Research Group (SHIVAR).
She has an established international research profile, with more than 250 publications and a portfolio of competitively funded research and capacity-building grants. Her early literature reviews on the typologies and theoretical frameworks of violence and abuse remain widely cited reference points in the field. In 2024 she led Gender-Based Violence: A Comprehensive Guide (Springer), a major edited volume bringing together contributors from across disciplines and countries.
Awards, honours and fellowships
Professor Ali is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She was a Global Nurse Leadership Institute Scholar with the International Council of Nurses and a Future Leader in Innovation and Research with the Academy of Medical Sciences. Her awards include the Mary Seacole Leadership Award, Sigma International’s Emerging Nurse Researcher Award for Europe, and the Pakistani Diaspora Achievement Award.
